Our Company

Community

We’re good neighbors, too.
When SDI announced its plans to build a greenfield steel mill near Butler, Indiana, the local community welcomed us with open arms. During the years since, Butler Division employees have shown their appreciation for that warm welcome by sharing their time, talent and treasure with the Butler community and the people of DeKalb County as a whole.

Dollar-for-dollar pledge match

Through a dollar-for-dollar pledge match by the company, employees and the division have come together to donate over $5 million to the United Way of DeKalb County since 1997. We also volunteer during the United Way’s annual Day of Caring.

Our efforts

Other efforts include the construction of a play park for kids; the remodeling of a youth center in Butler; the annual multi-day Tour de SDI bicycle ride to benefit children with disabilities; providing new backpacks filled with school supplies for children from low-income families; and leading book drives that benefit the entire community. We also support other organizations including Alzheimer’s Association, Youth Leagues, Fire Departments, Humane Shelters, cancer centers, Down Syndrome Association, Junior Achievement, Juvenile Diabetes, 4-H activities, women’s centers, The Kidney Foundation and many schools in our areas that range from K-12 to universities.

Philanthropy and volunteerism

During the holiday season, we adopt families in need, and we also lend our support to families of fellow employees serving in the military.

Of course, philanthropy and volunteerism aren’t limited to the giving folks at the Butler Division. Employees throughout SDI strive to help others. SDI employees serve on the boards of nonprofit organizations and educational institutions, and help organize fundraisers. The company supports the arts and other worthwhile cultural endeavors.
